Living Water

25 August 2014

"Jesus answered and said unto her, If thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that saith to thee, Give me to drink; thou wouldest have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water. The woman saith unto him, Sir, thou hast nothing to draw with, and the well is deep: from whence then hast thou that living water? Art thou greater than our father Jacob, which gave us the well, and drank thereof himself, and his children, and his cattle? Jesus answered and said unto her, Whosoever drinketh of this water shall thirst again: but whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life. (John 4:10-14)
spring

Jacob's well was spring fed and called by the people a "living water." Every day (or several times a day) this unnamed woman would bring her water pitcher to this well and fetch water for the men and others with whom she worked. Every day she did the same thing. And every day they would become thirsty again and send her back. The water was refreshing but only temporarily.

After her remarkable meeting with Jesus, the woman became a source of water for others. Physical water did not flow from her belly, but she was a source of spiritual refreshment to others. She quickly ran back to the city and told others about her experience. She then pointed them toward and brought them to Jesus. The Holy Spirit welling up in her became a source of spiritual refreshment for all those around her.

Our natural bodies have needs but we must first provide for the spirit or the natural sustenance has no deeper meaning. When we are made to see our sins and the forgiveness of them in Jesus Christ, we can be a source of spiritual refreshment of others. Where we once were thrusting all the time, we can now quench the thirst of others!
