They'll Never Learn

19 August 2015

Then certain of the scribes and of the Pharisees answered, saying, Master, we would see a sign from thee. But he answered and said unto them, An evil and adulterous generation seeketh after a sign; and there shall no sign be given to it, but the sign of the prophet Jonas: for as Jonas was three days and three nights in the whale’s belly; so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. The men of Nineveh shall rise in judgment with this generation, and shall condemn it: because they repented at the preaching of Jonas; and, behold, a greater than Jonas is here. The queen of the south shall rise up in the judgment with this generation, and shall condemn it: for she came from the uttermost parts of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and, behold, a greater than Solomon is here."(Matthew 12:38-42)

Jesus plainly calls these Scribes and Pharisees what they are - wicked. And the wicked will never learn.

The only sign that is given (besides the countless number of miracles) that Jesus is the Messiah is the three days and three nights Jesus will spend in the tomb. In particular, the biggest evidence that Jesus is the Messiah is that He will raise from the dead! But even then, the wicked will not believe.

The Apostle Paul confirms what Jesus says:

"For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God."(1st Corinthians 1:18)

The wicked will never learn.

So, what does that mean for the disciples of Christ?

Clearly, it does not mean that we are to go around deciding who is a child of God and who is not based on their level of belief in the gospel!

This passage in Matthew plainly shows us what the wicked think about the Bible and the evidence it shows proving Jesus is the Son of God. Disciples should therefore stop acting like the wicked!

We cannot say, "there is not enough evidence for me to believe and trust Him." We should not ask for further revelation from God. God has given us more than enough evidence in His word to give us a strong gospel faith.

Disciples of Christ simply need to get into the word and into church!
