Meek Does Not Mean Weak

11 March 2015

"Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.” (Matthew 5:5)

Many misunderstand the Bible when it says that we are to be meek. They think that means we are to be weak and never show any power, only cower away from danger and our enemies.

However, this is not the case. Jesus is our example for everything and He is described as being a meek person. But let me ask you –

Was Jesus weak when He overturned the tables of the money changers?

Was Jesus weak when He passed through the crowds of Pharisees trying to kill Him?

Was Jesus weak when He stood before Herod and Pontus Pilate and faced death for you?

Was Jesus weak when He raised up on pierced feet to overcome asphyxiation so He could shout “it is finished!”?

No. Jesus was not weak on any of these occasions, and we should never be either.

Meek means that you have power but are not easily provoked into irrationally using it. A meek person has access to the “power of God’s might” (Ephesians 6:10) but has patience to use it only against the true enemies of God and to fight against sin.

The promise to the meek (who are the elect of God) is that they will inherit the earth. Jesus does not mean this sin-cursed earth that is wasting away. Men, like Napoleon and HItler, sought to rule the earth but only gained a little and it melted away. The promise to the meek is that they will inherit (without effort) the new earth wherein dwells righteousness and joy. They will inherit a place where there is no sorrow nor crying and it will never fade away!
