Pride

"Ye have heard that it hath been said, An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth: But I say unto you, That ye resist not evil: but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also. And if any man will sue thee at the law, and take away thy coat, let him have thy cloke also. And whosoever shall compel thee to go a mile, go with him twain. Give to him that asketh thee, and from him that would borrow of thee turn not thou away." (Matthew 5:38-42)

On the surface, this portion of Scripture seems to be dealing with laws of retaliation, and it is. However, Jesus is really (once again) pointing at the sin behind the sin. Jesus is teaching against pride.

The "eye for an eye" law, as well as laws of capital punishment, exist so that civil government can fulfill its God given duty of maintaining order and civility. Paul confirms this role in Romans 13.

The problem is that the Pharisees applied these laws to personal offenses and it became an issue of protecting self pride. That is a sin.

We should not be concerned with our "rep." If we are concerned with what others think of us, it is probably our pride that could be hurt. This should not be a concern for a Christian.

If we live our lives beyond reproach, then no one will believe lies that are told about us.

Honor is not what other people think about us. Honor is marked by the life conformed to the life of Jesus Christ.

The only true worth a child of God has is the value of the blood of Christ. The only honor that needs to be defended is the sovereign holiness of Jesus Christ!
