"Paul, and Silvanus, and Timotheus, unto the church of the Thessalonians in God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ: grace unto you, and peace, from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ." (2nd Thessalonians 1:1-2)

In this brief, and quite familiar, salutation by Paul, there are some important points that should not be overlooked.

First of all, notice what high a view Paul has of the church. The church is not a social club. It is in God the Father and in the Lord Jesus Christ. When we "go to church" do we realize that we are going there to experience this intimate a fellowship?

We also see that there are three preachers who have been teaching this young church. But, unlike the ecumenical fad of modern Christianity, the three preachers are of one mind! They do not teach different doctrines to please different men. They present a united effort in giving glory to God not advancing their personal ministries or reputations.

And finally, we see the familiar blessings of grace and peace being pronounced. Even here, in this brief salutation, Paul is sure that the reader understands the source of these rich blessings.

Grace is unmerited favor bestowed FREELY upon an undeserving sinner. Paul reminds us that it was not a synergistic effort between God and man that brought grace into their lives. God is the only source and only power of grace, or else grace is no more grace.

The peace under consideration is not peace among men but a reconciliation between God and the elect family of God. The only way man can dwell with God is if God provides the way. And when God provides, there is complete peace.
